Trunk
c 1850
The trunk has "M.C. Lee" stamped on each side and an "Atlantic Transportation Line" sticker on the top.
This trunk probably belonged to Mrs. Lee and then was given to her daughter, Mary, who became a world traveler after the Civil War. Defying custom for a woman, she often traveled alone to exotic places, refusing to stay home with her family while her sisters cared for their aging parents. This trunk accompanied her on her travels.
