National Park sites are obligated to engage in meaningful consultation and collaboration with tribal nations, particularly when policies, actions, and regulations have direct effects on the nations connected to these sites. This obligation is not only a legal one but an ethical one as well. Many National Park sites occupy spiritually and culturally important places to Native peoples, and possess histories often marred by dispossession and exclusion of Native peoples from these sites. Mount Rushmore National Memorial currently consults with 21 associated tribal nations, whose names and official websites can be found below: For more information on Consultation and Coordination with Tribal Nation Governments, visit the U.S. Department of the Interior Collaboration and Consensus website. |
