Mount Rainier National Park
Guest Speakers

If your school is within a one-hour driving radius of the Park Education Center or located in a Gateway Community just outside the park, you may be able to arrange to have an education ranger come to your classroom. For classroom programs as well as in-park programs, we have a class size policy and will work with one class (up to 30 students) at a time but are happy to do multiple programs to accommodate more than one class. We are, however, unable to do assemblies.

Programs are limited to a single topic related to curriculum the students have been or will be studying. Current program topics include:

National Park Service: Mission, History, or Careers
Geology of Mount Rainier: includes Glaciers or Volcanic Processes & Hazards
Life Zones Ecology: includes plant and animal adaptions
Leave No Trace

To arrange a program in your classroom, call the park Education Office at (360) 569-6039 at least one month in advance of your desired program date; please have alternate dates available as well.

We hope to expand the travel radius in the future as staffing allows.

The mountain's namesake: Rear Admiral Peter Rainier of the British Navy.

Did You Know?
In 1792, Captain George Vancouver of the British Navy became the first European to sail into the Puget Sound. On the horizon, he noted a large, snowy mountain, known to local Native Americans as Tahoma, Takhoma, or Tacobet. Vancouver named it for his colleague Rear Admiral Peter Rainier.
