Things To Know Before You Come

Use the tips on the following pages to plan a late spring, summer, or early fall visit.  Although the Chapin Mesa Archeological Museum and Spruce Tree House are open all year, many areas including Wetherill Mesa, Far View Visitor Center, and overnight accommodations are closed during the winter months. Be sure to check the park’s Visitor Guide and the Operating Hours and Seasons page for details on services available during your visit.

Winter Season 2009-2010 Update

The Cliff Palace Loop Road will be closed to vehicular traffic on December 1st, 2009 (unless snowstorms result in an earlier closure). The Cliff Palace Loop Road is not plowed in the winter, building a base for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing opportunities. If you would like to cross-country ski, snowshoe, or hike this six mile (10 km) loop road, park just outside the locked gate, but do not block the gate. Highlights include Cliff Palace and Soda Canyon Overlooks (view of Balcony House).
Open 8:00 am to 4:30 pm.

For more information on what is available in the park this winter season, see the Winter 2009-2010 Visitor Guide.

Did You Know?
On a snowy December day in 1888, while ranchers Richard Wetherill and Charlie Mason searched Mesa Verde’s canyons for stray cattle, they unexpectedly came upon Cliff Palace for the first time. The following year, the Wetherill brothers and Mason explored an additional 182 cliff dwellings.
