00:00:21.500 --> 00:00:25.780 [John Dell'Osso] Point Reyes was established back in 1962 by President John Kennedy, and it was set aside as a very important area that had undeveloped coastlines. Point Reyes is the only national seashore out on the Pacific coast of California. The San Andreas Fault bisects the Point Reyes National Seashore and separates it from the rest of North America.
[insect buzzing and birds chirping]
[John Dell'Osso] The biological diversity is truly incredible here.
[bird trilling]
[Don Neubacher] Point Reyes National Seashore...has benefited from a program called the Natural Resources Challenge. And that's a funding source and an overall program to enhance the ability of parks to do resource management and research projects.
[insect buzzing and birds chirping]
[Don Neubacher] The park now receives a little over two and a half million visitors each year. The American public has become very sophisticated about environmental matters, and they want to know that Point Reyes National Seashore is managed well. And we got to make decisions that are science-based.
[insect buzzing and birds chirping]
[Don Neubacher] We have over 70 research projects underway. That includes work on tule elk, coho salmon, steelhead trout, Myrtle's silverspot butterfly, a lot of the special status species.
[John Dell'Osso] The reason that we're doing these research projects here at Point Reyes National Seashore is because our management decisions have to be based on good science.
[bird trilling]
[Don Neubacher] We have to have good information so we make good decisions, because the public knows the difference. It looks like we can make humans and all these animals coexist long-term. And it can work. And it can work well.
[insect buzzing and birds chirping]
[Don Neubacher] Point Reyes National Seashore provides a tremendous amount of pleasure to the American public. The research we're conducting here should ensure that the American public continues to have that great experience in the future.
