Description
In 1875, the agent assigned to report to the Bureau of Indian Affairs wrote that the Red Cliff Band had produced 25 tons of maple sugar and Bad River produced over 40 tons. That's a lot of sugar! The significance of maple sugar to the local Ojibwe bands is as important today as it was in the past. After long winters and with food stores running out, maple sugar was regarded as a special gift that came along with spring. The gift is still cherished today as many families continue to operate "sugarbushes."
