Dedicated 1915. The strategic genius of Nathanael Greene dominated the southern campaign of the American Revolution in much the same fashion that the giant equestrian statue of Greene today dominates the battlefield at Guilford Courthouse National Military Park. Nathanael Greene was born in Rhode Island in 1742. Born a Quaker, Greene's interest in military affairs led to his expulsion from the Society of Friends in 1773 and freed him to undertake his career as a soldier. After the Revolution began, Greene was quickly promoted through the ranks eventually gaining the rank of major general. Along the way he established an especially close relationship with his commander, George Washington, who considered Greene his most trusted subordinate. In the aftermath of the twin disasters of Charleston and Camden, South Carolina in the spring and summer of 1780, Gen. Geroge Washington directed Greene to assume command of the southern theater. Dedicated 1887. Captain Arthur Forbis commanded a company of Guilford County militia and was mortally wounded in battle. It was the first monument erected on the battlefield.

Dedicated 1888. This monument marks the grave of three Delaware Continental soldiers. The monument was constructed of red, white, and blue marble.

Dedicated 1891. Captain James Tate commanded a company of Augusta County Virginia militia. He was killed in the New Garden skirmish on the moring of the battle. His remains were reinterred at this site in 1891.

Jethro Sumner was Colonel of the 3rd NC Regiment, 1776-80, and was ultimately elevated to the rank of Brigadier General. He was not present at the battle of Guilford Courthouse but was on detached duty near Hillsborough. He was reburied here from Warren County in 1891.

Dedicated 1892. This monument honors the Maryland troops in the battle. It was financed by contributions from the Maryland Historical Society.

Dedicated 1893. John Daves served as the quartermaster of the 2nd NC Regiment until he was captured at Charleston in 1780. He was released and served as a Captain in the Battle of Eutaw Springs. He was reburied here from New Bern in 1893.

Dedicated 1895. Lt. Colonel James Stewart (as spelled on British military documents) of the Brigade of Guards was killed in the fighting on the third line. The monument marks the spot where a sword was found in 1866. The sword was engraved with the coat of arms of the Bllantyre family, connecting it to Stewart. That sword is now missing. The monument is the only one on the battlefield honoring the British army.

Dedicated 1895. Major Joseph Winston commanded the Surry County militia in the battle. The bronze statue is of Winston. The bronze tablet also lists Jesse Franklin and Richard Taliaferro.

Dedicated 1896. Lt. Colonel Henry "Hal" Dixon was appointed as Inspector General of Militia. He was present at the Battle of Guilford Courthouse. He died in 1782 from wounds recieved in the Battle of Eutaw Springs. Several errors in dates appear on the monument's tablet.

Dedicated 1896. William Hooper, Joseph Hewes, and John Penn served as North Carolina's representatives in the Continental Congress and signed the Declaration of Independence in 1776. Only Hooper's and Penn's remains were re-bruied in the park in 1897. Hewes' remains still lie in Christ Churchyard in Philadelphia. The monument and remains were moved to the present location in 1976. The bronze statue is of Hooper, the "Orator of the Congress".

Dedicated 1898. James Gillies was a young bugler in Lee's Legion killed by pursuing British cavalry in February 1781 near present-day Oak Ridge. His remains were buried at Bruce's Crossroads (now Summerfield).

Dedicated 1901. Captain James Morehead was the ancestor of Joseph Morehead, the second President of the Guilford Battle Ground Company. The "pup tent" shaped monument honor his service in the war.

Kerenhappuch Turner Monument

Dedicated 1902. Nathaniel Macon was an officer in Greene's army who left just before the battle to fill an elected seat in the NC Assembly. His rise in politics would take him to become the Speaker of the US House of Representatives. The "rude stone" of his monument reflects his political and social philosophy of simplicity and rigid economy.

Dedicated 1903. The people who saw the split of the nation due to the Civil War in 1861 erected this monument to renewed nationalism. The point is that Greene was a northerner leading southern forces and Washington, a southerner, led northern troops.

Dedicated 1904. David Schenck was the man who conceived the idea to preserve the Guilford battlefield. He founded and served as the first President of the Guilford Battle Ground Company, the non-profit corporation charged with administering the battlefield from 1886 to 1917.

Dedicated 1906. Joseph Winston was a major of Surry County militia and fought at the Battle of Guilford Courthouse. He later entered NC politics and served in various positions and as a US Senator and Representative. His remains and tombstone were moved here from Surry County. Jesse Franklin, a friend and fellow soldier of Joseph Winston, also served in NC politics and was Governor of NC. His remains were moved here from Surry County.
