Manzanar, a unit of the National Park Service, is guided by Federal laws and the policies of the Department of the Interior. We are funded by Federal tax dollars and take seriously our obligations to the American public.

Laws and Policies

Superintendent's Compendium (2019)

The Superintendent's Compendium provides specific park regulations for Manzanar National Historic Site including park closures, activities that require a permit, and areas for first ammendment related gatherings.

Firearms (2010)

As of February 22, 2010, a new federal law allows people who can legally possess firearms under applicable federal, state, and local laws, to legally possess firearms in this park.

It is the responsibility of visitors to understand and comply with all applicable state, local, and federal firearms laws before entering this park. As a starting point, please visit California's state website.

Federal law also prohibits firearms in certain facilities in this park; those places are marked with signs at all public entrances. At Manzanar National Historic Site, firearms are prohibited in the Visitor Center/Park Headquarters, also known as the historic auditorium.

Public Law 109-441 (2006)

Public Law 109-441, 16 USC 461 was signed into law on December 21st, 2006, for the establishment of the Japanese American Confinement Sites (JACS) grant program. This act is to provide for the preservation of the historic confinement sites where Japanese Americans were detained during World War II, and for other purposes.

Enabling Legislation (1992)

The Enabling Legislation is the act of Congress that established Manzanar as a National Historic Site.
