Resetting the Table: The History of Foodways in Vicksburg

The main goal of the "Resetting the Table: The History of Foodways in Vicksburg" project was to create a demonstration/teaching kitchen in the Catfish Row Museum, engage residents and tourists, showcase the connection between food and culture in the Mississippi Delta, promote culinary and cultural heritage tourism, and stimulate economic growth in the region.

To celebrate the completion of the kitchen and kickstart the initiative, the Catfish Row Museum organized several "Resetting the Table" events. These events featured a Summer Cooking Series with storytelling, tastings, and interactive cooking demonstrations led by six talented chefs. Additionally, the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians showcased their native cooking and culture.

The demonstration/teaching kitchen also collaborated with Vicksburg Family Development, United Way, and a local medical clinic to offer free nutrition classes tailored to the underserved community and diabetes classes for referred patients. This partnership addresses health equity concerns and promotes well-being through culinary education.

The LMDI Local Heritage Grant "Resetting the Table" has transformed the Catfish Row Museum into a culinary exploration, education, and cultural appreciation hub. It is now well-positioned to attract visitors, engage the community, and deepen understanding of the Delta's culinary heritage and the importance of good nutrition.

As part of the project, visitors can take a virtual tour of the placemats featured in the exhibit "Resetting the Table: Exploring Foodways in Vicksburg." This exhibit highlights Mississippi culinary traditions, including the Delta Chinese, Lebanese, Jewish, and other populations. Recipe cards are being created and placed on the back of six foodways placemats, providing visitors with a tangible takeaway.

Additionally, a captivating wall map titled "Everyone has a place at our table" has been installed, featuring a QR code that allows visitors to explore the rich foodways of the region in more depth. Donated cookware and cookbooks are also on display, enhancing the immersive and educational atmosphere of the museum.

"Resetting the Table" has made the Catfish Row Museum a destination for culinary exploration, education, and cultural appreciation. It is poised to attract visitors, engage the community, and promote a deeper understanding of the Delta's culinary heritage and the importance of good nutrition. Additionally, the Catfish Row Museum was awarded the prestigious 2023 Tourism Investment Award at the Mississippi Governor's Conference on Tourism.
