NATIONAL PARK SERVICE TO BEGIN $20 MILLION WILLOW BEACH PROJECT
WILLOW BEACH, Ariz. – Next week the National Park Service will begin construction on its $20 million redevelopment of the Willow Beach area. The project will bring new flood protection, a new campground with full RV services, a new riverfront trail, marina, and store.
"This project will accent the beauty of the area and improve services for our visitors. Coupled with the improvements being made on US-93 and the new bridge at Hoover Dam, we expect Willow Beach will increase in popularity among our visitors." said William Dickinson, Superintendent of Lake Mead National Recreation Area.
The Willow Beach launch ramp and Black Canyon Willow Beach Adventures concession operations including the store, raft tours, boat rentals, fuel services and marina will remain open during construction. The Willow Beach fishing pier will be open but may be temporarily closed for short periods to accommodate construction in the immediate area.
New flood control measures are a large part of the project that will address flood hazards in the area. An audible alert system will be installed to warn park visitors of an approaching flash flood. New concrete flood control channels will direct water flows around and away from visitor areas.
The project is expected to be completed by October 2010. Crews will be working through this summer constructing the campground and RV park. To reduce visitor inconvenience, the bulk of the work near the shoreline will take place after Labor Day.
The contract was awarded to Interstate Rock Products, Inc. and is funded through the Southern Nevada Public Lands Management Act (SNPLMA).
