LAKE MEAD DUI CHECKPOINTS, AUG 15 & 23

LAS VEGAS - The National Park Service will be conducting sobriety checkpoints in the Lake Mead National Recreation Area on the following dates and locations:

- Saturday, Aug. 15, Lakeshore Dr. near Las Vegas Bay from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

- Sunday, Aug. 23, Cottonwood Cove from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The checkpoint held on July 11 resulted in 5 arrests. In 2008, there were a total of 193 arrests for DUI in the recreation area.

It's a federal crime to operate a vehicle or boat under the influence in a National Park Service area. Penalties include fines up to $5000, maximum 6 months in jail, and up to five years probation.
