Kalaupapa National Historical Park will conduct a planning effort beginning in Spring 2009 that will lead to a new general management plan (GMP). The National Park Service is working on a new general management plan that will provide guidance for the future preservation and management of Kalaupapa for the next 20 years. It will serve as Kalaupapa's "blueprint" for the future. We hope you will join us to express your thoughts, ideas, and vision so that together we can keep Kalaupapa a sacred place for the patient community along with the protection, preservation, and interpretation of cultural, historical, and natural resources. We are reaching out for your kōkua and mana'o as we develop the general management plan.
There will be several opportunities to share your thoughts and ideas about Kalaupapa. We hosted public workshops on Moloka'i, O'ahu, Maui, Hawai'i, and Kaua'i during April and May 2009. Over 400 people attended the public workshops and dozens more provided written comments about their concerns and ideas for the future of Kalaupapa. The comments are rich in diversity of experiences, opinions, and connections to the people of Kalaupapa and the place itself. The latest newsletter reports on the information we received from you, the public.
We will update the public about the planning process with a series of meetings in Honolulu, Kaunakakai, and Kalaupapa in December 2009 (see schedule below). Please come if you are able, otherwise feel free to contact us to express any concerns and ideas you may have.
