A Web of Generosity: The Prominent Players In the days after the assassination of President Garfield, it was unclear whether or not the president was going to live. A friend of the Garfield family, Cyrus Field, started a subscription fund with the United States Trust Company of New York for the purposes of supporting the Garfield family in the event of the president’s passing. The fund ultimately ran through the 80 days of Garfield lingering, through his death and funeral, and ended on October 15,1881. Through the efforts of this fund, Mrs. Garfield was supported throughout the rest of her life and was able to provide the best life for her family. Although any citizen could donate to the fund, some prominent figures from the time are also known to have contributed. Follow the web below to see who you recognize!

Archaeology Month Every year in October, archaeological groups from all over the world celebrate Archaeology Month. From ancient sites and our world’s prehistory to more recent events, archaeologists and others in the field dedicate their time and skills to researching, excavating, and preserving sites and material culture for generations in the future to enjoy. Civil War archaeology has become a rapidly growing subject within the field, but as its popularity grows, the process continues to face its own challenges. Interested in the processes archaeologists go through to conduct excavation and research about the Civil War? Go to the Mentor Public Library on October 9 at 12:00 pm for the Leaders and Legacies of the Civil War Era talk for more information! Can’t make it on October 9? You can find the recordings of all the Leaders and Legacies talks on the Mentor Public Library’s YouTube channel, MentorPublicLib.
