Saturday, August 3 at 10 a.m. Behind the Scenes Tour

This tour takes participants into areas of the Garfield home not seen on the public tour as well as numerous other buildings on the Garfield property. It involves walking, climbing steps, and bending over in small spaces. This tour is held at 10 a.m. Reservations required; please e-mail us or call 440 255-8722. Cost is $15/person. Must be 16 or older. This tour is the first Saturday of every month.

Sunday, August 4 at 2 p.m. Lakeland Community College Civic Band Perfromance on the Lawn


Join us for our third and final outdoor concert of the summer when the Lakeland Community College Civic Band performs on the lawn behind President and Mrs. Garfeild's home! Experience live music as it was enjoyed on the property during the summer of 1880 when Garfield ran his "front porch" presidential campaign from his home. This will be the Lakeland Civic Band's third straight year performing here at JAGNHS! Feel free to bring lawn chairs, drinking water, and picnic baskets! (Alcoholic beverages are NOT permitted.)

Saturday, August 10 at 10 a.m. Behind the Ropes Tour

Not to be confused with the Behind the Scenes tour, this tour goes behind the public barriers in several rooms inside the Garfield home to give participants a closer look at and additional information about many of the home’s unique artifacts. This tour takes place at 10 a.m. Reservations required; please e-mail us or call 440 255-8722. Cost is $15/person. Must be 16 or older. This tour is the second Saturday of every month.

Leaders and Legacies of the Civil War Era Speaker Series:
The Atlanta Campaign (Encore)


This month we head to Georgia, following William T. Sherman's campaign to capture the population and rail center of the South, Atlanta. This is an encore presentation of a program originally presented in August, 2014. The program is free; please call Mentor Public Library at 440 255-8811 to reserve your spot. Saturday, August 17 at 10 a.m. Garfield Neighborhood Walking Tour

Learn more about the Garfield’s’ life in Mentor with a walking tour of several blocks immediately east and west of James A. Garfield National Historic Site. Features a “then and now” look at the Garfield family’s neighborhood using historic photos and modern views. This tour involves about 1.5 miles of walking and is held at 10 a.m. on the third Saturday of each month Reservations required; please e-mail us or call 440 255-8722. Cost is $15/person. Please wear comfortable walking shoes. This tour is the third Saturday of every month from May to October.

Saturday, August 24 at 10 a.m. Junior Behind the Scenes Tour

This is a special adapted version of our regular Behind the Scenes tour that is just for kids (ages 9-15). Children will tour the visitor center, barn, and windmill on the property, as well as visit the Garfield home’s screened-in porch and third floor. They will also participate in several Park Ranger-led activities while on the tour. This tour is FREE for kids ages 9-15. Parents may pick up children after the tour or wait in the visitor center. This tour begins at 10 a.m. on the fourth Saturday of each month (May-October). Reservations are required. Kids are free; parents may wait in the Visitor Center to pick up kids after the tour. Sunday, August 25 National Park Service 103rd Birthday, A Fee-Free Day

President Woodrow Wilson signed legislation creating the National Park Service on August 25, 1916, so we're turning 103 years old today! After more than a century, our core mission remians to "promote and regulate the use of the Federal areas known as national parks, monuments, and reservations hereinafter specified by such means and measures as conform to the fundamental purposes of the said parks, monuments, and reservations., which propose to conserve the scenery and the natural and historic objects and the wildlife therein and to provide for the enjoyment of future generations." Come visit James A. Garfield NHS for free in honor of our birthday!

Saturday, August 31 at 10 a.m. Architecture and Restoration Tour

Want to know more about the architecture and design of the buildings here at James A. Garfield NHS? Interested in knowing how and why the current design of the Garfield home was chosen for display back in the mid-1990s? Then this tour is for you! This special fifth Saturday tour takes you around the property to examine design features of the Garfield home and other buildings. This tour is held at 10 a.m. Reservations required; please e-mail us or call 440 255-8722. Cost is $15/person. Must be 16 or older.

Leaders and Legacies of the Civil War Era Speaker Series: The Battle of Antietem (Encore)


The September 17, 1862 battle of Antietam is still the single bloodiest day in American history. The Union victory here also gave President Lincoln the victory he needed to issue the Preliminary Emancipation Proclamation. Learn more about this brutal but important battle in Maryland. Friday, September 13 at 10 a.m. Naturalization Ceremony

In honor of Constitution Day (Sept. 17), visit the site to witness dozens of individuals from nations across the globe take the oath as America's newest citizens. The Garfield home provides an appropriate and idyllic setting for this uniquely American ceremony. This event is planned in partnership with the League of Women Voters, Citizenship & Immigration Services (U.S. Department of Homeland Security), and the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio. The public is invited to attend free of charge.

Saturday, September 28 National Public Lands Day A Fee-Free Day!

National Public Lands Day is set aside each year for Americans to reflect on and celebrate national parks, fish and wildlife refuges, national forests and other lands set aside for the benefit and enjoyment of the people. Tour the Garfield home, enjoy the museum exhibts and film, walk the grounds and enjoy learning about President James A. Garfield. No entrance fees are charged at any National Park Service sites across the U.S. on Public Lands Day.
