Tell It Like It Was - 2nd grade

Beginning readers play detective in this literacy-based program. During the tour, students spend time in the presidential memorial library and explore mystery objects from Garfield’s time. They use their senses and describing words to reveal these unfamiliar items to their classmates. In the Visitor Center, children hear stories about and view photos of the five Garfield children, and then draw pictures to retell their stories.
Program time: 1 hour 45 minutes

Timelines and Tours – 4th grade

Students use museum exhibits to gather facts for a giant timeline covering over 200 years of Ohio history. Patterns emerge to show that history is multi-layered and relevant to our current lives. The Garfield home tour compares the lives of the Garfield children in the 1880s (no indoor plumbing or electricity!) with those of students today. An optional trip to Lake View Cemetery leads students on a tour of the Garfield monument, along with memorials to other historical figures in Northeast Ohio.

Program time: 2 hours (Garfield site only) OR 5 hours (Garfield site + Lake View Cemetery)

  • Each 4th grader will be issued an Every Kid Outdoors pass, good for family admission to national parks and federal lands through summer, 2023.

  • Title 1 schools receive free transportation.

Garfield and His Union Friends – Junior High

Students survey the Civil War through an examination of trunks representing President Lincoln, General James Garfield, Frederick Douglass, Walt Whitman, Mathew Brady and Rebecca Rouse. The roles of these influencers are revealed, along with the tragedies they witnessed and endured. An optional tour through Lake View Cemetery focuses on Northeast Ohioans who played a part in this national conflict. This program was named the 2022 Midwest Region's Education Program of the Year by the National Park Service.
Program time: 2 hours (Garfield site only) OR 5 hours (Garfield site + Lake View Cemetery)
