Research Permit Review Process

Research permit applications and proposals go through a review process in order to ensure that all proposed research studies for Gulf Islands National Seashore comply with NPS statutes and policies, that park resources and values are not impaired, and that park visitors are not unduly impacted by the proposed activities. Staff reviews:

  1. Potential impacts to park resources, contribution of study to knowledge of park resource management issues, demonstrated need to conduct study within the park, duplication of efforts, and consistency with resource management and restoration plans, etc.

  2. Potential impacts to park visitors, impact to park natural, historic, and cultural resources, and impact to visitor protection activities, safety, etc.

  3. Compliance with the National Environmental Protection Act (NEPA) and compliance with Section 106 of the National Historical Preservation Act.

  4. Compliance with the Wilderness Act.

  5. Compliance with National Park Service Director’s Order #24.

  6. Upon completion of the review process, a recommendation is made to the Park Superintendent for approval of the proposed study, approval with conditions and/or restrictions, or denial of the proposed study.
