Field Trip Expectations

These expectations are for all visitors - please make sure your students and chaperones are familiar with these before your visit.
 
 

Student Behavior Guidelines

  1. Respect the park. Everything in the park, including forts, batteries, artifacts, plants, and animals, is protected by law and must remain where it is found.
  2. Respect the fort. Explore on designated walkways. Do not climb on brick or concrete walls, earthen mounds, and cannons. It is illegal to draw or write on historic structures and to remove objects from the park.
  3. Respect wildlife. It is disrespectful and illegal to harass wildlife in any manner, including feeding them, throwing objects at them, making loud noises, and approaching them. Remember that we are visitors in their home. Stay at least 15 feet away from all animals.
  4. Respect plants. Do not pick sea oats or break leaves off plants. Stay on marked paths and sidewalks so that plants do net get trampled.
  5. Respect other visitors. Just as in the classroom, yelling, running, throwing objects, and derogatory remarks are unacceptable.
  6. Respect each other. When a ranger, teacher, chaperone or other student is talking, please listen quietly. Keep your hands to yourself.
  7. Respect the ranger. Stay with the group- No one should venture ahead of the leader or away from the group.
  8. Pack It In Pack It Out. Everything that came with you needs to go back home with you, even your trash from lunch!
  9. Respect yourself. Keep yourself safe by not climbing on fort and battery walls and cannons.
 

Chaperone Expectations

In addition to the expectations above for students, chaperones should also be reminded of the following responsibilities.

  1. Put phones away- If you need to take an emergency call, please step away from the group.

  2. Leave No Trace- Make sure students are staying on the trail, not picking flowers, not disturbing wildlife,and help students pick up all of the trash and scraps after lunch and snack.

  3. Keep the group safe- Check with students to make sure they are drinking water and have enough of the right kind of layers.

  4. Keep the group on task- Take care of any behavioral issues that come up so the rest of the group can keep enjoying their program with the ranger.

  5. Model good behavior- Assist the ranger and students with activities, sit when the students sit, listen attentively, participate ingames and activities.

  6. Keep the group together- Accompany students to the bathroom and keep the group together.

  7. Emergencies- All of the rangers have at least First Aid and CPR certifications as well as First Aid kits. They can also easily call for help. Let them know ASAP if something needs attention.
