Governors Island is located in New York Harbor, 1/2 mile from the southern tip of Lower Manhattan and 400 yards west of the end of Brooklyn's Atlantic Avenue and Red Hook waterfront. It is accessible only via ferry.


Ferry from Manhattan:
Ferry service is provided from Battery Maritime Building at 10 South Street on the corner of South and Whitehall Streets in Lower Manhattan (next to the Staten Island ferry terminal).

  • Ferry service is provided every hour starting at 10 AM on weekdays and every 30 minutes on weekends after 11 AM.
  • Last ferry to the island leaves at 4 PM on weekdays, 5:30 PM on weekends.
Weekdays: 10 AM, 11 AM, Noon, 1 PM, 2 PM, 3 PM and 4 PM.
Weekends, Memorial and Labor Days: 10 AM, 11 AM, 11:30 AM, Noon, 12:30 PM, 1 PM, 1:30 PM, 2 PM, 2:30 PM, 3 PM, 3:30 PM, 4 PM, 4:30 PM, 5 PM and 5:30 PM.

Ferry returning to Manhattan:
On Weekdays, service is provided hourly on the half hour (:30) starting at 10:30 AM until 4:30 PM, and are followed by 5 PM ferry and last ferry at 6 PM.
On Weekends, starting at 11:30 AM, ferries depart for Manhattan every 30 minutes until the weekend closing time at 7 PM.

This ferry also operates year round, providing service to those having official business with organizations on the island, the island's staff, contractors, students of the New York Harbor High School.


Weekend Only Ferry Service from Brooklyn:
Ferry service is provided from Brooklyn Bridge Park's East River Pier 6 at the end of Atlantic Avenue. This service only operates weekends, Memorial Day and Labor Day during the summer. It is best characterized as "load and leave" and generally runs every 25 minutes. Ferry service to the island runs from 11 AM to 5:30 PM.

Weekend Only Ferry Service Returning to Brooklyn:
Starting about 11:15 AM, there is load and leave service every 25 minutes until the island closes at 7 PM.


East River Ferry service:
This commercial ferry service is provided by the East River Ferry from points in Manhattan, Greenpoint, Williamsburg, Fulton Ferry and Wall Street. For more information on schedules, routes and costs, visit East River Ferry's website.


Getting to a Ferry to Governors Island:

Public transportation is the best way to get to the ferry to Governors Island. Check for the status of weekend bus and subway service.

Subway - The R train to Whitehall St
Taking the Brooklyn-bound or Staten Island ferry exit off the platform brings you to Whitehall Street. Continuing the same direction will bring you to the corner of Whitehall and South Streets, in view of the big, green Battery Maritime Building across the street.

Subway - The 1 train to South Ferry
Exits will bring you out in front of or inside the Staten Island ferry terminal. The Battery Maritime Building is to the left of the Staten Island Ferry Terminal.

Subway - The 4/5 train to Bowling Green
Brooklyn-bound passengers from uptown exit on to State Street. Follow it to the Staten Island ferry terminal, the Battery Maritime Building is next door to the left. Uptown passengers from Brooklyn exit on Whitehall Street. Turn right and follow it to its end at the Staten Island ferry terminal.

Bus - M15 to White Hall st, South Ferry
The Governors Island Ferry Terminal is to the left of the Staten Island Ferry Terminal.

Most taxi drivers will not know where Governors Island is located or how to get there. To avoid misunderstandings and side trips to an a far away island they do know how to get to (Rikers Island, Staten Island, City Island - it can happen), direct them to drop you off at the Staten Island ferry terminal at South and Whitehall Streets. The Governors Island Ferry departs from the Battery Maritime Building next door.

The Governors Island Ferry from Brooklyn Bridge Park - Bus/Subway
Brooklyn Bridge Park Pier 6 for the ferry from Brooklyn is located at the foot of Atlantic Avenue. The closest subway stop is Borough Hall, which is approximately a 15-minute walk away. The closest bus stop is Atlantic Avenue and Court Street on the B63 or B61 bus.

Driving to Lower Manhattan:

If you need to drive your vehicle to Lower Manhattan, directions are provided below. Cars are not permitted on Governors Island. If you would like to drive to Lower Manhattan in the vicinity of the Battery Maritime Building, you will need to park your car in either a parking garage or on the street.

Please Note: In lower Manhattan, on-street parking is extremely difficult to find. Parking is metered at one-hour intervals. Parking regulations are vigorously enforced and parking tickets are costly. Commercial parking lots and parking garages are available-mostly along South Street, near the South Street Seaport.

Driving Directions to Lower Manhattan:
  1. From the East Side of Manhattan: FDR south to Exit 1, the Battery Park/Staten Island ferry exit.
  2. From the West Side of Manhattan: Take the West Side Highway/West Street to the FDR and exit at South Street as you emerge from the Battery Park Tunnel.
  3. From Midtown, take Broadway to its end in Lower Manhattan, then bear left to State Street til it becomes Water Street, right on Broad Street and right on South Street.
