  • The terrain on Governors Island is mostly flat and may be accessible to wheel chair users with assistance.
  • Due to the historic nature of the island, some of the walkways may be uneven or lined with cobblestone.

Governors Island is jointly administered by the Governors Island Preservation and Education Corporation (GIPEC) and the National Park Service. Many visitor facilities and services are administered and maintained by GIPEC. Their facilities are indicated by “*”

 

For People With Mobility Impairments:

        The following visitor facilities are accessible with assistance to wheelchair users: Building 140 – Visitor Information and Bookstore. *Battery Maritime Building waiting room. *The ferryboat, Samuel Coursen.

        Accessible bathrooms are located: *Building 140 – at rear of building. *Battery Maritime Building Waiting room. *Accessible Porta-johns around the island. 

        No wheelchairs are available at Governors Island.

         Over two miles of paved streets exist on Governors Island*.

        The courtyards of Fort Jay and Castle Williams (National Park Service areas) are paved. following trails and walkways are paved: the courtyards of Fort Jay and Castle Williams.

        The following ranger-led walking tours follow paved, wheelchair-accessible routes (assistance may be required especially along cobblestone paths): National Landmark Historic District Tours, Wednesdays and Thursdays, 10 AM and 1 PM (offered from beginning of June through the end of August). For People With Hearing Impairments:

        There is no film, video or audio-visual program at the park.

        There is a printed, self-guided version of the National Historic Landmark District provided at the Battery Maritime Building Waiting Room Bookstore and the Building 140 – Visitor Information and Bookstore.

 

For People With Sight Impairments:

        There is no film, video or audio-visual program at the park. 

        Large print walking tours are available upon request. Please contact the park at 212-825-3045 to ensure their availability.

        There is no information currently available in Braille.
