Top Ten Things You Need to Know About the Going-to-the-Sun Road for 2009

Glacier National Park is open year-round. Most visitor services and facilities are open May through September; however, autumn/winter/spring non-motorized recreation opportunities and primitive camping are available year round services and amenities are available year round in gateway communities.

The Going-to-the-Sun Road (Sun Road), the only American roadway designated both a National Historic Landmark and a National Civil Engineering Landmark, began a multi-year rehabilitation in 2007.Accelerated night work and shoulder season work (after mid-September and before mid-June) cause short-term impacts to the smallest numbers of park visitors.

The Sun Road project received $27.6 million in federal stimulus money to rebuild from Big Bend to Logan Pass. Remaining funds will be applied to the next phase of work in 2010 (Logan Pass and Siyeh Bend).

Short traffic delays will occur above The Loop to Haystack Creek and later between Big Bend and Logan Pass
Expect one-lane directional travel through a gravel corridor and 30 minutes delays from 6 am to 10 pm.
Monday night through Friday morning from 10 pm to 2 am and 2:30 am to 6 am – expect up to four-hour delays.

Schedules for the multi-year rehabilitation call for opening lower elevations in the spring as weather and work permits and opening the alpine section over Logan Pass from mid-June to mid-September. In 2009, once open, the entire Sun Road will be open through Sunday, September 20, weather permitting.

A Class Five avalanche slid from the Continental Divide across the west side of the Going-to-the-Sun Road last January, but will not delay the opening of the road this spring.The avalanche damage will cost between $200,000 and $300,000 to repair, and lies within this year’s construction. The slide wiped out 460 feet of guard-wall, most of which was historic.

For 2009, the Sun Road transit system operates July 1 through September 7 (Labor Day) from 7AM to 7PM. The system is FREE once park entrance fees are collected.An east side hiker shuttle is available for a fee.
