Traffic in the New Jersey / New York metropolitan area is frequently heavy, regardless of the time of day or weather. If traveling by car to scheduled events in the park, allow extra travel time, or use public transportation.
Expect Traffic Delays on Sandy Hook due to Highlands Bridge Construction.
The NJ Department of Transportation is replacing the Highlands Bridge located near the entrance to Sandy Hook. The bridge remains open but traffic is restricted to one lane in either direction. This project is resulting is traffic backup within Sandy Hook of up to 90 minutes on summer weekends between 2 pm and 9 pm. Traffic delays on weekdays and in the off season has thus far been minor.
Summer weekends are always busy at Sandy Hook. When parking areas are filled, the park closes to new traffic until spaces become available. You can avoid traffic and delays by arriving before 10 am or after 2 pm. The park does not close on weekdays as there is always parking availalble.
