Park Interpretive Programs

During the summer, scheduled interpretive talks, guided tours, and living history programs are offered. Commercial and school groups numbering ten or more, interested in a formal guided tour, may make advance reservations.

A 1.6 mile, self-guided interpretive trail enables visitors to tour the ruins. Visitors may opt to do a shorter .5 mile self guided tour.

Allow approximately two hours for visit.

 

Accessibility

A 1.6 mile or a shorter .5 mile self guided trail enables physically impaired visitors access by wheelchair or electric cart.

Glimpses of the Past Program -

 

Every 3rd Thursday

 

Provided every third Thursday of each month, except December, at the Citizens Committee for Historic Preservation (CCHP) Building on

Bridge Street in Las Vegas, NM. The Program consists of entertaining and educational presentations by university professors and students, local and regional historians, and National Park Rangers. Programs are diverse in subject  matter yet relate to the natural and cultural history of New Mexico and the Southwest. Perfect opportunity to learn, ask questions, and make connections. Program is free to the public.

 

 

 

Cultural Encounters Event - June 26-27

 

The Cultural Encounters Event ia a two-day event filled with keynote guest speakers, living history demonstrations, entertainment, and ranger led tours. This is an opportunity to immerse yourself in the stories and connect to the lives of those who came before. Food, shade, and outdoor seating is available.

 

 

First Fort Tours - July 17

 

Annual Ranger led talk/tour that takes you back to the years of Fort Union’s establishment on the High Plains.The Ranger led presentations will allow the visitor to connect to the storiesof New Mexico’s and Fort Union’s vast history. Water and shading will be provided. Please bring sunscreen, hat, good walking shoes, your thinking caps, and your imagination!

 

 

Candlelight Tours -  August 21

The popular evening event is a series of ranger led tours around the Fort Union ruins with historical vignettes taking place at each stop. The tours bring to life stories of those who lived in and around the Fort Union military post, and make the stories so much more than whispers on the open plains. Water, snacks, and facilities are available. Reservations for tours are required.

Did You Know?
In 1821, the eastern terminus of the historic Santa Fe Trail was Franklin, Missouri; by 1832, Independence, Missouri; and by 1845, at Westport Landing, now Kansas City, Missouri. Textiles and hardware were traded west; silver and mules were traded east.
