This slightly elevated view of the Commissary as seen from the northwest, shows the bastion fortifications along the base of the building. As with many postcards of the Commissary, this one mistakenly says the building was erected in 1830. The second Fort Smith was not begun until 1838.

The U.S. Army selected a spot overlooking the confluence of the Arkansas and Poteau Rivers for the site of a fort. Soldiers from the Rifle Regiment arrived in 1817 and named the site Fort Smith after their commanding officer, Thomas A. Smith.
