People of World War I

When the United States declared war in April, 1917, officially entering the First World War, the busiest era of Fort McHenry's history would begin. The fort's new role would be that of hospital as the General Hosptial No. 2 was established. 100 buildings were constructed, hundreds of nurses and doctors began to staff the location, and patients wounded in the War to End Wars began to flood the site. All had a vital role to play in the story of Fort McHenry, and the country. Many had experienced the horrors of war, only to return home to experience the horrors of the Spanish Influenza. Learn about the stories of those who participated during the time period of the Great War.
