Operating Hours
The Temporary Memorial is open from dawn to dusk, 365 days a year. Volunteer Ambassadors staff the Memorial 40 to 60 hours per week, depending on the season. To check the current staffing schedule at the Temporary Memorial, please contact the park office at (814) 443-4557.
Seasons
Forecast for Shanksville, PA
Fall-Winter Generally, cooler weather starts in September with warm days and cool nights. The first snowfall of the season occurs by mid-October and extends through late March to mid-April. During most of the winter the daytime temperatures range in the mid-20s to 30s, with periodic warming in the 40s and 50s. The average annual snowfall is approximately 80 inches for Somerset County.
The Flight 93 Temporary Memorial is located on a very windy hilltop. Most visitors find the site much colder than the surrounding area.
Spring-Summer May is more predictable for warmer weather with daytime temperatures in the 60s and 70s. July and August are seasonably warm for the area with high humidity and temperatures in the high 80s or 90s.
The Flight 93 Temporary Memorial is in an open field and there is a constant breeze even in the summer. There is no shade and the sun can be intense at mid-day.
Other Useful Information
Please remember the Temporary Memorial is only open during daylight hours from dawn to dusk. The Memorial, access roads and parking lots are not lighted at night
The following policies exist for the site:
- No solicitation, concessions, brochures, sales, signs, or advertisements are permitted;
- Overnight parking or loitering at the site are prohibited;
- Planting of trees, flowers, or shrubs is not allowed;
- No structures are to be installed at the site.
The Flight 93 Temporary Memorial is a place for quiet reflection and expressions of respect. Help maintain the dignity of the site by not smoking or bringing pets, food, or drink into the memorial area.
Visitors may write their thoughts or simply record their visit in bound books or on comment cards provided at the Temporary Memorial. These books and cards, along with the tributes left by visitors, will be archived as part of the Flight 93 National Memorial permanent collection. Please do not write on memorial tributes left by others.
The Temporary Memorial is located on private property. Please respect the owner’s rights by not trespassing beyond the gravel area of the memorial and the parking lots.
The crash site itself is accessible only to family members of those killed on Flight 93.
