During the summer, Florissant Fossil Beds may offer internship opportunities with the paleontology and/or interpretive division. Major duties, educational requirements, and application procedures are different for each position. Many alumni of the internship program have gone on to graduate school and/or careers in the National Park Service.
Interpretation
Interpretive interns provide information to the public about the fossil resources and the natural and cultural history of the area. Following a training period, they plan, prepare, and present programs to groups of all ages; conduct guided hikes; contact visitors on the trails; give historic homestead tours; and staff the visitor center.
Paleontology
Paleontology interns will work on projects relating to the geologic and paleontologic resources of the park, including: fossil collection and curation; technical assistance with excavating, inventorying and monitoring of sites; database development; and self-directed research. The specific scope of duties will be determined by the needs of the park and the intern’s area of interest. Self-initiated research projects require a research proposal outlining the project and specific field work to be conducted. Paleontology interns are supervised by the park’s Paleontologist.
Credit:
Academic credit may be arranged with the intern’s school. Research topics or independent study projects will be agreed on by the intern, the college advisor, and the NPS supervisor.
