Inspire your class by planning a trip to the Edgar Allan Poe National Historic Site!

We offer 2 educational programs:

A Standard Tour which is 45 minutes. Students will have time to view our exhibit area, watch an 8-minute audio-visual program and take a ranger-guided tour through Poe's home.

Or perhaps you'd like to inspire your students to participate in our most requested educational program, "Poe In Philadelphia" which includes all the elements of the Standard tour plus an interactive game. Students participate in a quiz based on the popular television game show ,"Jeopardy" Students will have the chance to stimulate their minds as they compete against their classmates for educational prizes. The "Poe In Philadelphia" program is 90-minutes and limited to 25 students maximum! This program in only offered during March - December!

  1. Consider a pre-visit to the site.
    See for yourself what we have to offer you and your class! No reservation is required for your pre-visit. Take time to review the exhibits, sales center and our Reading Room. Staff will be on hand to answer any questions you may have. Don't forget to sign our guestbook and/or join our mailing list for upcoming events. 
  2. Select which education program is appropriate for your group.
  3. Select a date and time for your trip. Keep in mind we are closed Mondays and Tuesdays. On street parking is usually available.
  4. Call for a reservation. Reservations are necessary to provide the best quality experience for your class, group or organization. Our limit to tour Poe's historic house is 25. For larger group's we will have to split your group during their visit.
  5. Request or download our Teacher's Handbook to review prior to your visit.
  6. Confirmation letters will be mailed out on the 15th of the preceding month. If you need a confirmation sooner, let us know when you make your reservation. Confirmation letters can be sent via regular or your e-mail address.

Did You Know?
Thomas Nelson, Jr., is one of Yorktown's most famous residents. He was a signer of the Declaration of Independence, served as Governor of Virginia in 1781, and commanded the Virginia militia during the 1781 siege of his hometown. His home still bears damage from the bombardment during the siege.
