Hiking Safety

Devils Postpile National Monument includes almost 800 acres of beautiful granite domes, waterfalls, and other amazing natural features. In addition there are over 2 million acres that surround the monument that are part of the Inyo Forest which contain over 100 miles of hiking trails. When entering these areas you inherit the responsibility to protect yourself from the risks and hazards that are present. Here are some quick tips to Hike Safe in and around the area of Devils Postpile.

Have a plan
Inform someone of where you're going and
when you plan to return
Keep a flashlight and whistle with you
Eat well, stay hydrated: carry plenty of water

Stay on the trail
Ask for HELP!
Familiarize yourself with the area, use a map
Expect changes in the weather
Black Bears are excellent tree climbers.  

Did You Know?
Black bears are commonly seen in Devils Postpile. Although they are not as active in winter months and spend much of this time in their dens, they could be seen any time of the year.
