"Meet the Mules" is just one of the many programs offered by C&O Canal Rangers.

The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park excels in quality interpretive programs. Living history programs are a specialty of the park. Two replica canal boats pulled by mules operate during the spring, summer, and fall. Rangers dressed in historic clothing tell the story of life on the canal in mid 19th century America.

Other ranger programs include special events such as Life and Death on the C&O Canal. There are also hikes, walks, lift lock demonstrations, power point presentations, web-based children's programs, mule programs, etc.. Whether you attend a ranger program in Georgetown, Washington D.C. or the Paw Paw Tunnel in western Maryland, the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal has something to offer for everyone.

The Visitor Guide lists interpretive programs and general park information. It is published quarterly.

Interpretive programs throughout the park are listed in the quarterly C&O publication, The Visitor Guide. You may also call any of the visitor centers for programs being offered at that particular site.

Drawing DaVinci's lock gate design 1485.

Did You Know?
Transporting goods and people by canal dates back to antiquity. The lock gates used on the C&O Canal were an adaptation of a design by Leonardo DaVinci in the late 1400's. Until the advent of the railroad, water travel was far superior to land travel.
