Great Falls

 

December 5 Holiday Special Event: The Gilmore Light Ensemble, a living history music group,  will play popular 19th century songs and carols at the Great Falls Tavern.  The program is from 1:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m. and is free.  Light refreshments will be  served.  Please call 301-767-3714 for more information.

 

 

Billy Goat Trail Geology Hikes

Join National Park Service Volunteers for an exciting and educational geology hike of the Billy Goat Trail.

Canal Boat Rides

Canal boat rides have ended for the 2009 season.  They will resume the spring of 2010.  Contact the Great Falls Tavern Visitor Center at 301-767-3714 for additional information and other programs.

The Charles F. Mercer canal boat rides will begin the spring of 2010.   (Spring, summer, and fall months only.  Canal boat rides are not offered during the winter months).

 

Hikes, Bikes, Walks

Saturdays: April-October

Join a park Ranger to explore the Great Falls area in greater depth.  Topics include geology, mining, history, and the Great Falls itself.  Lenth varies from 30 minutes to 1.5 hours.  Inquire at the visitor center for more information.

Riley's Lockhouse

Saturday and Sunday, 1:00-4:00 p.m.: May-June; September-October

Join volunteers in period costume for a guided tour of one of the C&O Canal's original lockhouses and explore the life of a lock-keeper in greater detail.

 

Georgetown

 

The Georgetown Visitor Center is closed for the winter of 2009-2010.  Please call the Great Falls Tavern for more information at 301-767-3714.

 

Canal boat rides are offered Wednesday through Sunday at Georgetown starting the spring of 2010.  Ranger led tours are offered during the spring, summer, and fall.  Boat rides are not offered during the winter months. 

 

Brunswick

Visitor Center 301-834-7100.

Open Friday, 10am-2 PM., Saturday 10 am -4 PM., Sunday 12 pm-4 PM.  Inter-agency visitor center with the Brunswick Railroad museum.  Park information, orientation, and exhibits on the canal.

 

Lander Lockhouse Open House

Saturdays, 11:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m.: April 18-October 10.

 

Williamsport Sub-District Interpretive Fall/Winter 2009-2010 Programs

Open year round, visitor center can be reached at 301-582-0813.  Self-guided walking tours available of historic structures nearby including aqueduct and lockhouse.

Museum, orientation, exhibits, and information are available in the visitor center.

 


Hancock

Museum, exhibits, and information available the summer of 2009.  Please call 301-678-5463 for more information.  Closed during the winter.

Cumberland Area Programs for Spring/Summer 2009.

Open year round.  Visitor center can be reached at 301-722-8226.  9 am-5 PM. Please call for program listings.

Museum, exhibits, orientation and information house in historic 1913 Western Maryland Railway Station.  Inter-agency visitor center provides information on park and Allegany County tourist information.

Did You Know?
Transporting goods and people by canal dates back to antiquity. The lock gates used on the C&O Canal were an adaptation of a design by Leonardo DaVinci in the late 1400's. Until the advent of the railroad, water travel was far superior to land travel.
