Tabby Floor Replacement

The floors you walk on during your visit to the Castillo are a protective layer of tabby, placed above the historic floors. To ensure we preserve the historic, unexcavated floors below, as well as provide a safe walking surface for our more than 700,000 annual visitors, we are in the process of replacing several of the worn floors throughout the Castillo.

 

What is Tabby?

Tabby is a type of concrete, created by burning oyster shells to create lime, then mixing the lime with water, sand, ash, and broken shells. This material has been a common building material in St. Augustine for more than 300 years.Our park masons are using materials and skills similar to those used centuries ago as they preserve this fortress.
