The first program in the five-week series Beyond the Beach presented by Cape Cod National Seashore will take place on September 30th at 6:30 PM at the Salt Pond Visitor Center in Eastham.

The Herring River Estuary in Wellfleet covers an extensive area of the town and has significant environmental and historical value. Since the 1908 construction of a tide-restricting dam, and subsequent 20th-century impacts, the Herring River and its estuarine resources are greatly degraded or gone altogether. Prior to the alterations, the abundant natural resources of the estuary fed people who settled along its shores through thousands of years of human history. Two national seashore specialists will team up to provide an overview of the past and future of this important resource. National Seashore Historian Bill Burke will illuminate this rich human history and share images that provide a glimpse into this past. National Seashore Restoration Ecologist Tim Smith will summarize what decades of research and scientific study have revealed and what the future holds for the Herring River Estuary.

Beyond the Beach is a five-week series of presentations focused on the national seashore's diverse resources and programs, ranging from animal migrations and prescribed fire, to ecosystem restorations and coastal change. All programs are free and wheelchair-accessible. The series will culminate on October 28 with a presentation by Cape Cod National Seashore Superintendent, George Price with State of the Seashore: Successes and Challenges of 2014, and a Look Ahead to 2015 and the National Park Service Centennial in 2016.
