Battlefield Tours

Step back in time with a guided tour of Big Hole National Battlefield, led by our dedicated rangers. These interpretive hikes, ranging from 1.2 to 2 miles round-trip, take you across the very ground where people camped and fought during the tragic events of August 1877. Along the way, rangers share stories of bravery, resilience, and cultural significance, painting a vivid picture of the lives affected and the legacy that endures.

As you explore, you’ll gain insight into the complex relationships, struggles, and moments that shaped the nımí·pu·, soldiers, volunteers, and the land itself. The tours provide a chance to see the battlefield through a new lens, fostering a deeper connection to this sacred site.

Be Prepared: Since mosquitoes are prevalent, especially in warmer months, we strongly recommend bringing insect repellent. Wear comfortable footwear, dress in layers for changing weather, and come prepared to immerse yourself in the powerful stories of Big Hole National Battlefield.

Ranger Talks

Join us for a half-hour Ranger Talk to gain a deeper understanding of Big Hole National Battlefield. These programs, held either on the Visitor Center deck or in the viewing room, offer stunning views of the battlefield and bring the history of this site to life. Our rangers share stories of the people and events of the 1877 battle, and the enduring significance of this sacred ground.

Whether you’re learning about the cultural heritage of the nımí·pu·, the decisions of the military, or the pivotal moments that unfolded here, these talks provide a meaningful way to connect with the landscape and its history. Summer Speaker Series:

Immerse yourself in the rich cultural heritage of Big Hole National Battlefield through our Summer Speaker Series. Each summer, tribal members and other experts share their knowledge, traditions, and personal insights with visitors. These presentations offer a unique opportunity to hear directly from those connected to the land, learning about nımí·pu· culture, Montana history, and the enduring significance of the battlefield.

Presentations are typically held at the visitor center, though some may take place at other designated locations within the park. This series provides a powerful way to connect with the living legacy of Big Hole and gain a deeper understanding of its cultural importance. Please check the calendar for the latest schedule.

Guided Tours of Bear Paw Battlefield

Explore the historic Bear Paw Battlefield, 6 hours northeast of Big Hole near Chinook, MT, with a knowledgeable ranger as your guide. During the summer months, rangers lead reservation-only tours, offering insights into the final chapter of the Nez Perce Flight of 1877. Learn more about the profound history of this sacred place, where the nımí·pu· made their last stand, and learn about the lasting impact of these events on the nımí·pu· and American history.
