Palau

In November 1987, the government of Palau requested assistance from the National Park Service to identify significant underwater archeological heritage sites in the Republic’s submerged lands. In 1988, the SRC was assigned the task and the job was conducted under the auspices of “Project Sea Mark” – an arrangement through which the considerable diving and logistic support resources of the United States Navy can be made available to help in NPS related historic preservation missions.

The Navy used the task objectives outlined by the NPS scientific personnel as focus for providing remote surface-supplied diving mobilization training for reservists. During the field operations, six WWII Japanese transports sunk by US forces were mapped and photo-documented in place, several smaller vessels such as landing craft and airplanes were also recorded and reconnaissance surveys were made of areas where earlier shipwrecks and prehistoric sites are suspected to exist. Much emphasis was given to hands-on training for Palauan personnel from the Division of Cultural Affairs in submerged sites research.
