CSS Georgia

|
In August 2001, the US Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District, contacted the Submerged Resources Center and requested technical help in planning and administering archeological operations planned for the wreck of CSS Georgia. A Confederate ironclad, Georgia was built in Savannah in 1862 and employed as a floating battery to prevent Union naval forces from moving up the Savannah River and attacking Savannah. Georgia was scuttled on December 24 1864 to prevent its capture by Union land forces that were closing in on the city. The wreck lies in an area of the Savannah River scheduled for deepening and may be significantly affected by proposed dredging operations.
