Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore

This area on the northwestern shore of Michigan’s lower peninsula is a rich maritime area with many sites related to Great Lakes shipping. Sections of NPS as well as State of Michigan bottomlands in the area have been designated as the Manitou Passage Underwater Preserve.

The SRC was first requested to work in this park in 1979 but wasn’t able to focus any field operations there until the late 1980s and early 1990s. At this time, efforts were being made by Jed Jaworski of the Northwest Michigan Maritime Museum and Ken Vrana of Sea Grant to complete an assessment of submerged cultural resources. Results of the research conducted by SRC during this time were incorporated into a comprehensive report on the Preserve authored by these individuals.

  • September 1990 – Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and Michigan Manitou Underwater Preserve. Instruct volunteers in use of magnetometer survey. Documentation of six preserve shipwrecks, Larry Murphy, Project Director.

  • September 1988 — SRC archeologist Toni Carrell visited the park and worked with staff and representatives of Northwest Michigan Maritime Museum and Sea Grant to document a submerged schooner and to plan future research in the park.
