Submerged resources associated with San Juan Island revolve around the Pig War of 1859. This was the incident that almost plunged the US and Great Britain into war and the reason for the parks designation. Historical accounts place the grounding of the General Harney in Griffin Bay while the conflict was playing out. The vessel was carrying military supplies and several tons were reportedly spilled on the bottom before the ship was freed and removed from the area. It is believed that the General Harney was eventually lost in an area near Cattle Point, just east of American Camp.
Other underwater archeological resources of interest include the remains prehistoric reef nets. These features would have left stone anchors as material residues making for interesting archeological sites. The exact location of these features is somewhat debated among historians, placing them either off Cattle Point or north of Eagle Point. |
