Padre Island National Seashore

Some of the earliest historic shipwrecks in the New World are located off Padre Island, Texas. Several vessels associated with a Spanish flota (1554 plate fleet) were lost in areas straddling the two-fathom contour line that separates state and NPS jurisdiction. In 1967 one of the wrecks was located by a treasure hunting company--it remained in litigation for almost two decades in what came to be known as the Platoro Suit. The State of Texas and the National Park Service have cooperated regarding research and management of these sites since the early 1970s.

NPS observers were involved in the 1973 work conducted by the State of Texas under the direction of Carl Clausen and later work under Barto Arnold. In July 1985 and June 1986, the SRC led joint field operations with the cooperation of the Texas Antquities Committee at Padre Island. A shallow, near-shore area north of the Mansfield Cut was surveyed using magnetometry. Anomalies discovered then and during the 1985 survey were optically positioned, relocated and ground-truthed. Some beach excavations were also conducted.
