Glacier National Park

Glacier National Park had long been identified by the SRC as a target for underwater archeological assessment. There are several natural lakes and two man made lakes in the park that have been the loci of significant cultural activity in both Pre-Columbian and historic times. In addition, John Benjamin, a former ranger at Glacier had spoken of several archeological sites he had noted in the 1980’s while a member of the park’s dive team. However, it wasn’t until 1996, in association with major survey operations at Yellowstone National Park, that a convergence of logistical opportunities allowed a reconnaissance level survey of the park to become doable. The results of the 1996 underwater survey operations were compiled by Matt Russell in a 1997 report.
