At the Superintendents request, SRC began a remote sensing survey of Sandy Hook in 1995. That years field season was cut short due to equipment problems, and SRC returned to Sandy Hook in 1997 to complete the project. In Fall 1997, SRC completed magnetometer and single-beam depth sounder coverage of the park from the shoreline to a quarter-mile offshore, on both the ocean-side and bay-side, with the exception of areas that were too shallow for the survey boat to access. This documented numerous magnetic anomalies. A sample of the anomalies were investigated, and it was found that most were on a flat, sand bottom, indicating that whatever material caused the anomaly was buried. Because of dramatically changing shorelines, several anomalies located in the water on the ocean-side were found to be WWII-era military installations. |

| In 2002 SRC was able to leverage a project at Ellis Island into additional remote sensing surveys of Sandy Hook, Miller Field, Hoffman Island, Swinburne Island and the Fort Wadsworth areas of Gateway NRA. Included in this work was an underwater archeological clearance for an emergency boat dock at Battery Weed.
