Assateague Island National Seashore

Assateague Island National Seashore contains significant maritime archeological resources both on land as well as within the park boundary extending ½ mile into the Atlantic. The island forms a hazard to marine traffic resulting in numerous shipwrecks within the park boundary. These in turn contributed to the development of salvage and wrecking activities historically. In addition, the park’s proximity to urban centers and commercial fishing and processing industries has resulted in the preservation of significant maritime-related archeological resources, both on land and underwater.

We also investigated and positioned several beached shipwreck fragments, which seem to uncover and move around on a regular basis.

In 2000 SRC staff collaborated with the NPS Philadelphia Support Office to develop a Scope of Work for a comprehensive remote sensing survey of the park, which was conducted by the State of Maryland in 2001-2002.
