During the early 1980s the SRC helped the staff of War in the Pacific NHP form a submerged cultural resources team that was active not only in their home park but at American Memorial in Saipan. SRC archeologist Toni Carrell coordinated these efforts with the park staff and in 1985 personally dived the sites in Saipan Lagoon inventoried by the group. Jim Miculka, leader of the team in December 1984 co-authored a report entitled Submerged Cultural Resources Assessment of Saipan Lagoon by Miculka, Kevin Carter and Nobuo Ichihara. All of the information included in that and earlier reports appears in the SRC Professional Report on Micronesia edited by Carrell and cited below. Most sites identified relate to WWII and include the remains of several planes and vessels including a tug, submarine chaser and a freighter. SRC operations in Saipan were usually tagged on to larger projects in nearby Guam. All surveys were conducted in cooperation with the government of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands who has jurisdiction over the lagoon but cooperates with the NPS for management. |
