Central MA
Description: A scenic region of 35 towns in southern central Massachusetts and northern Connecticut. It is made up of nearly 1,100 square miles of predominately undeveloped forests and farms, thousands of historic structures, and a plethora of recreational opportunities that include antiquing and crafts. Clara Barton Homestead (Oxford, MA)68 Clara Barton Road North Oxford, MA 01537 Description: Childhood home of Clara Barton, founder and president of the American Red Cross; served as a safe haven later in her busy career. Transit Directions: Not applicable. Driving Directions: Oxford is located approximately halfway between Boston and Springfield. From the East or West: 1. Take I-90 (Mass. Turnpike) to Exit #10 (Auburn). 2. After the tollbooths, take the offramp on the right onto MA-12 South. 3. Drive south on MA-12 through 3 sets of traffic lights. 4. At the fourth traffic light, bear left and continue 1.2 miles. 5. Turn right onto Clara Barton Road, and continue 0.7 miles to the top of the hill. 6. The Clara Barton Home will be on your right; parking is available across the street. From the North or South: 1. Take I-395 to Exit #4B (“Sutton Ave.”) in Oxford. 2. Proceed west on Sutton Avenue to Oxford’s town center. 3. At the first traffic light, turn right onto MA-12 North, and drive approx. 3 miles. 4. Turn left onto Clara Barton Road, and continue 0.7 miles to the top of the hill. 5. The Clara Barton Home and museum will be on your right; parking is available across the street. Free parking is available across the street from the site. Back to Top Old Sturbridge Village (Sturbridge, MA)1 Old Sturbridge Village Road Sturbridge, MA 01566 Description: Old Sturbridge Village recreates New England village life in the years 1790-1840. Transit Directions: Not applicable. Driving Directions: Old Sturbridge Village is located near Sturbridge, approximately 60 miles west of Boston. From the South: 1. From I-84 northbound, take Exit #2. 2. Turn left at the end of the exit ramp. 3. Follow “Sturbridge Village” signs to the main entrance. (After 7:00 p.m. take Exit #3B to US-20 west. Stay in the right lane approx. 0.5 miles. Exit right at Information Center "jughandle" and follow signs to Sturbridge Village’s main entrance.) From the East or West: 1. From I-90 (Mass. Turnpike), take Exit #9 (“I-84 South”). 2. Take the first right turn after the tollbooths onto US-20 West. 3. Drive west on US-20 approx. 0.5 miles. 4. Stay in the right lane, and turn right into the “jughandle” entrance, following signs to Sturbridge Village. Free parking is available. Back to Top Prudence Crandall Museum (Canterbury, CT)Scenic Routes 14 & 169 Canterbury, CT 06331 Description: The site of New England's first academy for black girls; established by Prudence Crandall, 1833-1834. Driving Directions: Canterbury, CT is located approximately 85 miles south of Boston, halfway between Hartford and Providence. From Worcester and Points North: 1. From I-395 southbound, take Exit #88 (“Plainfield/Oneco”) onto CT-14A. 2. At the end of the exit, turn right at the intersection. 3. At the next intersection, turn left onto CT-12. 4. At the first set of lights, turn right onto CT-14A West. 5. Stay on CT-14A (which will run parallel with CT-14 West) into the center of Canterbury. 6. The Museum is located at the junction of CT-14 & 169. The museum building will be on your left; the parking lot entrance is the second left after the intersection. From Providence and Points West: 1. Take US-6 West going through Scituate and Foster, RI. 2. At the Connecticut border, follow signs for I-395 South. 3. From I-395, take Exit #88 in Plainfield, CT. 4. From this point, follow the directions for "From Worcester and Points North", above. From Hartford and Points West: 1. Take I-84 East to I-384 East. 2. At the end of I-384, take US-6 East into Willimantic. 3. Pick up CT-66 East - through Willimantic - to CT-14 East. 4. Remain on CT-14 East into the center of Canterbury. 5. The Museum is located at the junction of CT-14 & 169. The museum building will be on your right; the parking lot is located behind the building. Directions from New London and Points South: 1. From I-395 northbound, take Exit #89 onto CT-14 West. 2. Take CT-14 West to the junction of CT-169 in the center of Canterbury. 3.
