The Appalachian Trail (AT) will lead you to beautiful views, streams, and lakes. However, the trail crosses steep and rugged terrain through the Berkshire Mountains. Plan your hike based on 1.5 miles per hour until you are familiar with your own abilities, or when traveling with children. Check the weather before you leave, and always leave your itinerary with someone at home. Remember to bring plenty of water and to treat and/or filter water from streams and lakes. Packing food, a flashlight, and rain gear is also advisable. If backpacking, remember that overnight sites along the AT are first-come, first-served. Practice “Leave No Trace,” especially, carry out your trash. (More information on Leave No Trace can be found at http://www.lnt.org.)

Travel Tips:
Check trail maps and guidebooks for trail access points.
