Description:
The site of the first successful integrated iron works in North America, in operation 1646-1668. The reconstructed iron works plant with working water wheels, the restored 17th-century iron works house, the setting on the Saugus River, and the museum exhibitions illustrate life in the Massachusetts Bay colony as well as the critical role of iron making to 17th-century settlements and its legacy in shaping the early history of the nation.

Driving Directions: 
Saugus is located approximately 10 miles north of Boston.
From the North or South (via I-95):
1. From I-95, take Exit #43 (“Walnut Street”).
2. Drive east on Walnut Street (towards Lynn).
3. Turn right onto Central Street, and continue to 244 Central Street.
(Follow the National Park Service signs to the Iron Works.)
From the North (via US-1):
1. Take the “Walnut Street” exit toward Lynn.
2. At the bottom of the ramp, proceed straight onto Walnut Street.
3. Turn right onto Central Street, and continue to 244 Central Street.
(Follow the National Park Service signs to the Iron Works.)
From the South (via US-1):
1. Take the “Main Street/Saugus” exit.
2. Turn right onto Main Street.
3. In the next rotary, take the first exit onto Central Street and proceed to 244 Central Street.
(Follow the National Park Service signs east through Saugus Center to the Iron Works.)
From Boston:
1. Take I-93/US-1 North.
2. From I-93, take Exit #27 (“US-1 North”) and cross the Tobin Bridge.
3. From this point, follow the directions from US-1 in “From the South (via US-1)”, above.
Free on-site parking is available.
Ranger Tips:
A beautiful place for photography in all seasons. Good walking shoes are
helpful on the earthen walkways. Advance reservations are needed for large groups.
