Legacy Project conceived as Bicentennial Project by the Nation's Capital
Bicentennial Celebration (NCBC)
1998 - In February
a Kickoff "Show & Tell" Commuity Meeting launches the
project concept to the Langston, Northeast DC and greater Washington,
DC communities. Gues of Honor: Robert Stanton, National Park Service
Director; Charlene Drew Jarvis, DC City Council; Kevin Chavous, DC City
Council; Dick Johns, PGA Mid-Atlantic Section Director; Sam Lacy, Afro-American
Newspaper.
1998 - Robert Stanton,
NPS Director, approves 5-year NPS agreement for fundraising campaign
with NCBC.
1998 - The US Golf
Association Foundation awards NCBC a $55,000 grant to build a small
children's chip and putt course at Langston. The new kids' amenity was
opened in 2002.
1999 - In April
the "Langston Golf Course Legacy" is showcased in "A
National Town Meeting for Sustainable America" by the EPA.
1999 - Dr. Marshall
Banks of Howard University joins NCBC's legacy project team as Chairman
of Langston Project.
1999 - In October,
The NPS approves NCBC's fundraising plan for the Langston Project.
1999- In November, the 2nd
"Show & Tell" Community Meeting celebrates the fundraising
kickoff with keynote speech by Dr. Calvin Sinnette, author of "Forbidden
Fairways", and with USGA-sponsored traveling exhibit, "African-Americans
in Golf -- Epochs of Courage".
2000 - DC Mayor
Anthony WIlliams accepts invitation to serve as Honorary Chairman of
NCBC's Advisory Board for the Langston Project.
