Job Titles for Interpretation


 

Advanced Interpreters

Any Full Performance interpreter who wishes to pursue advanced skills in a range of interpretive areas will be developmental opportunities in several electives. Any advanced skills module or component may be taken as long as any designated pre-requisites are satisfied by prior training or "testing out."


Interpreters (Park Ranger)

Entry Level: Entry Level Park Ranger interpreters are primarily responsible for basic interpretive programs, informational contacts at visitor centers, reception desks, kiosks, and roving contacts at national park sites. This is a trainee position, which requires basic communication skills, and basic, demonstrable interpretive knowledge, skills, and abilities in order to advance to the next level.

Developmental Level: The Developmental Park Ranger Interpreter has acquired and demonstrated the basic ability to prepare and present a program and now is ready for broader interpretive writing, conducted activities, demonstrations/illustrated programs, and basic education programming.

Full Performance Level: To complete her/his interpretive competence the Full Performance interpreter will learn additional skills in partnering, interpretive planning, advance interpretive techniques, resource knowledge, auditing and critiquing peer and staff programs, and developing park-wide educational programs. With these competencies the interpreter will be able to perform effective, competent interpretation at any NPS site.
