2015 SNOW HAZARD: Even after blasting, the trail will still involve crossing snow that will deform over time into an uneven surface as it melts. This means the tread on Ahern Drift (approx. 3.5 miles from Granite Park) may become hardened and packed ice with a steep angle tread thus crampons, an ice axe, and the knowledge and skills necessary to use this equipment safely is recommended.
Additional snow hazards: Cattle Queen Drift (approx. 6.5 miles from Granite Park)is a low angle drift which can be up to 120 ft across. It will melt out from underneath creating a thin snow bridge that is probably not visible to hikers. This drift thus becomes a hazard in June and should be approached with caution from late June-into August. There is an alternate route below the drift that involves crossing Cattle Queen Creek about 130' below the trail. 5/15/15 per 256
2015 STOCK ADVISORY: The Ahern Drift section (3.5 miles north of Granite Park) is NOT recommended for single horses nor for mule strings carrying loads due to a retaining wall collapse near the drift which has narrowed the trail to 3' wide. There are additional sections of trail between Ahern and Fifty Mtn. that were damaged from a June/2013 storm that make the trail very difficult for stock traffic. Repairs will be complicated and have not yet been scheduled. 5/15/15 per 256.
