Gayle Hazelwood has been selected as the new deputy regional director for resource stewardship and science in Southeast Region. Her duties will also include supervising the parks of the Atlantic Coast Cluster. Gayle is currently the superintendent of National Capitol Parks - East.
Gayle was born in Cambridge, Ohio, and has an undergraduate degree in therapeutic recreation and a graduate degree in recreation management from Ohio University. Her National Park Service career started as a seasonal employee at Cuyahoga Valley National Park in 1983. She was hired permanently in 1985.
Gayle is no stranger to the Southeast Region, having served previously as chief of interpretation at Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site, as an interpretive specialist in the regional office, and as superintendent of New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park.
Her hobbies are golf, travel, golf, being outdoors, and golf.
“I was 20 years old before I had any knowledge of the National Park Service,” says Gayle. “I want to do all I can to make sure that does not happen to the young generation of today. All children young and old should have firsthand knowledge of and experience with their National Parks.”
Please join us in welcoming Gayle to the Southeast Region family!
