Bent's Old Fort NHS is seeking a qualified applicant interested in a non-competitive lateral transfer to a subject-to-furlough (up to four pay periods) WG-5 general maintenance worker position. Approximately 60% of the duties are janitorial.
Bent's Old Fort NHS is located seven miles east of La Junta, Colorado. The applicant must emphasize his/her experience in the areas of janitorial, minor plumbing, electrical, painting and equipment operations. Experience with "green products" is a plus. The person selected will be required to work weekends, holidays and special events.
In addition to working at Bent's Old Fort NHS, the employee may occasionally be required to work at other national park sites, including Sand Creek Massacre NHS (CO) and Capulin Volcano National Monument (NM) during special events or projects.
Sand Creek Massacre NHS and Capulin Volcano NM (hub parks) are within the daily commute. All three parks work as a core team, with shared staff and resources.
Bent's Old Fort NHS is located in southeastern Colorado, with an elevation of 4,200 feet. Summers are hot and dry, and temperatures regularly exceed 100 degrees. Winter temperatures average in the 30 degree range, but can drop to zero. La Junta has a population of approximately 8,000. Cost of living is low, with abundant housing for sale or rent. No park housing is available. The community offers many amenities, including good schools, grades 1-12, a community college, movie theater, restaurants, shopping and recreational opportunities.
